Green issues dominated last week’s headlines in light of the new carbon emissions and mileage standards and the proposed “American Clean Energy and Security Act.” It’s fairly obvious that carbon emissions and greenhouse gases negatively affect our atmosphere, but what’s not so apparent is the impact of our consumption practices.
This GreenTech Pastures blog post titled, “Your green IT project: Who should play a role?” discusses a Forrester Research report that states “enterprise architects, application portfolio managers and business process professionals are increasingly becoming involved” in green IT projects. Blogger Heather Clancy notes, “I think the fact that business process managers are getting involved, because many Green IT strategies (one BIG example is paperless transactions of all sorts) could have a huge productivity and profit impact. They are actually more about Sustainable Business than Green IT.”
We couldn’t agree more that how we use our resources can have a big impact on the bottom line and save natural resources. For example, one Metastorm customer used BPM software to take its contracts management process online and “save trees” in the process. The customer anticipated that it would process between $1 billion and $2 billion worth of contracts. By using BPM to automate this process, the customer saved both time and paper.
