Mirco Schrempp, editor of management magazine Business Technology, caught up with Ulrich Meyer, regional manager for Central Europe and Russia at Metastorm, to discuss the current business and technology benefits of BPM and future applications of this solution.

In this interview, Ulrich highlights the importance of BPM projects being driven by business heads while working closely with the IT department to ensure benefits are realised across the whole enterprise. He was also asked to explain the relationship between BPM and SOA: BPM is the environment where an organization can design and automate its processes while SOA is a valid approach that in the long run can be seen as an evolutionary step towards a more flexible architecture,” says Ulrich. “In today’s economic climate it is important for firms to be agile so that they can adapt quickly to market demands. At the same time, they are becoming more process-oriented so this is why we should expect to see a rise in the number of users that will employ a combination of BPM and SOA.”

The conversation concludes with an outlook on future applications of BPM: the aim will be to reach a better understanding of how to map process improvements to specific strategic goals so that more value can be taken out of BPM projects. Metastorm expects BPM deployments will expand in scope to tie into enterprise and business architecture initiatives. The big picture of enterprise assets can be mapped across core business processes to fully optimize the people, systems, and data resources to meet strategic objectives.

This is something Metastorm is already starting to see happening within their customer base.
