You’re not alone.  Last week, I held a <a href="http://goto.metastorm.com/power-of-business-transformation-ow-form.html">webinar</a> in which I discussed how business transformation efforts are often unsuccessful— and an overwhelming majority agreed.   </p>
<p>When I asked the attendees to describe their ability to handle major and ongoing changes within their organization in a poll, 63% of participants indicated that it was “slow, painful and expensive” and 31% said that efforts were “disjointed and siloed.” <a rel="attachment wp-att-2895" href="http://www.becauseprocessmatters.com/change-is-necessary-%e2%80%93-but-can-your-organization-handle-it/business-transformation-webinar-poll-pie-chart-020711-2/"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2895" title="How will you rate your own organization's ability to handle major and ongoing changes?" src="http://www.becauseprocessmatters.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/business-transformation-webinar-poll-pie-chart-020711-300x240.jpg" alt="" width="286" height="223" /></a> Meaning only 6% of the 83 participants who responded believed that their organization “could be an industry model for business transformation.”</p>
<p><span id="more-2181"></span></p>
<p>I’m not surprised.  Often, organizations struggle to manage change because they lack a consistent approach to business transformations.  Determining the end goal of a transformation (whether it be upgrading to a new technology, seeking operational efficiency, or staying ahead of competitor innovation) is one thing, but trying to figure out a successful, cost effective way to roll out the transformation takes deep insight into the day in and day out activities and processes within the organization.  </p>
<p>What organizations need to do is figure out how to communicate and collaborate across the enterprise so they can break down the obstacles to change. One way to achieve this is to align the organizational structures against a framework that enables organizations to prioritize and manage transformation initiatives – while also providing visibility into key organizational practices and providing vehicles to help people in cross-functional roles communicate and work together more effectively.      </p>

To keep up with today’s fast paced business environment you need to start thinking about how to prepare and handle potential business transformations.  From managing a merger or acquisition to upgrading to SAP to selecting a sourcing strategy, business transformations take many forms.  Business transformations, big or small, give you the opportunity to improve and advance your business operations – allowing your organization to evolve and expand your footprint within the market place.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are BPM and EA aligned in your organization?  On September 28, Metastorm teamed up with Forrester to deliver a webinar entitled, “How Capability Maps Can Bridge the Gap between EA &amp; BPM,” which featured Clay Richardson, senior analyst for Forrester, and Neal Lohmann, director of business transformation for Metastorm.  An audience of 325 business and IT professionals from large global organizations across several continents, including North America, Europe and Australia, tuned in to learn how organizations can leverage capability maps to address and significantly improve the disconnect between enterprise business architecture (EA) and business process management (BPM) teams.  </p>
<p>In an audience poll, 49% of participants said that their current EA and BPM efforts were separate and not aligned, 47% said they were separate but collaborating, and only 4% said they were fully aligned. </p>

<p>Clay Richardson said that the problem we are seeing within organizations today is that everyone wants to drive strategy in different directions.  BPM teams are responsible for driving strategy for process transformation and EA teams are responsible for driving strategy for IT investments.  One major problem is that the teams do not see the value in the others’ goals and purpose.  EA teams just think of BPM as another technology investment and BPM teams just think EA is all about making pretty pictures.</p>
<p> This poor collaboration between EA and BPM teams creates a major disconnect between the strategic goals and objectives of organizations and the actual day-to-day execution at the process level.  Clay talked briefly about the hundreds of different frameworks that are designed to bring EA and BPM together to meet a common shared vision – ideally an organization would find a middle ground that incorporates standards but also gives them the flexibility to incorporate their own uniqueness.</p>
<p>Clay explains that capability maps –which are an organizational model associating the business capabilities, processes, and functions required for business success with the IT resources that enable them – are important to have because they identify and prioritize the capabilities that need to change and transform over time.  Business and IT users can utilize capability maps to highlight the weak and broken processes within their organizations and also identify the relationship between bad data and broken processes.  In essence, capabilities serve as a common language that both business architects and process professionals understand.</p>
<p>But organizations are not necessarily taking advantage of capability maps to bridge the EA/BPM gap.  Of the 80% of webinar participants that responded to our second poll question – Where are you with capability mapping? –  50% said they would like to start a capability mapping initiative, 31% said they have already started capability mapping, and 18% said they are currently starting a capability mapping project. <a rel="attachment wp-att-2912" href="http://www.becauseprocessmatters.com/metastorm-teams-with-forrester-to-shed-light-on-ea-bpm-disconnect/poll-graphics-2-2/"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2912" title="Forrester Poll Graphic 2" src="http://www.becauseprocessmatters.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Poll-Graphics-2-300x240.jpg" alt="" width="277" height="228" /></a></p>

<p>Clay mentions that more and more BPM vendors are beginning to think about capability models, and Metastorm leads the market in providing native capability mapping and enterprise modeling in its enterprise EA and BPA software which can be directly aligned with processes on the Metastorm BPM platform.</p>
<p>To close the webinar, Neal Lohmann discussed Metastorm’s Business Transformation Practices Framework, which is an executive management framework designed to align the people, process and technology initiatives of an organization closer to its business strategy and vision to help support and promote new, innovative business strategies, while meeting long-term objectives.  The Metastorm Business Transformation Practices framework is founded on capability and operating models, and when aligned to an organization’s own framework supports the development of operating models that accelerate productivity, reduce system complexity, create market driven strategies and enable ongoing change and transformation.   </p>
<p>Neal encourages organizations to align business practices against the Metastorm Business Transformation Practices Framework in order to identify the gaps and mitigate the risk between EA and BPM users.  Establishing a clearly defined vocabulary through capability modeling will allow organizations to operate more effectively and implement successful business transformations.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Metastorm is very proud to <a href="http://www.metastorm.com/news/2010/092810.asp" target="_blank">announce</a> that the City of Richmond’s Department of Information Technology has received numerous awards this month, including two awards recognizing its CommonCents—Employee Budget Feedback Process that was developed using Metastorm BPM.  The city received the <a href="http://richmondvaannouncements.blogspot.com/2010/09/city-of-richmond-receives-several.html" target="_blank">Digital Government Achievement Award</a>, which recognizes the top 50 outstanding agency and department websites and projects at the application and infrastructure level.  The city also received an honorable mention for the <a href="http://www.covits.org/governor's_technology_awards/execSummaries.cfm#CommonCents" target="_blank">Governor’s Technology Award</a> that honors outstanding achievements and recognizes innovative technology initiatives in the public sector throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. </p>
<p>The CommonCents project was developed using Metastorm BPM and designed to increase government efficiencies by including employee feedback in addressing budget shortfalls in fiscal year 2010 and 2011.  Within two weeks, the Department of Information Technology was able to design and deploy a web-based application that allows city employees across all levels to provide feedback and cost-saving ideas about problems they have discovered in the budget.  </p>

<p>Leveraging Metastorm BPM’s proven solutions, CommonCents allows users to create a process that generates email notifications and to-do lists that are assigned and distributed throughout a review team, who then filter all incoming suggestions into specific departments based on its objective.  From there, the ideas go through an in-depth cost-saving analysis and assigned to specific members of the department team.  If a suggestion is believed to provide tangible cost-saving benefits, it is then assigned to the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer and the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for approval.  </p>
<p>Implementing the CommonCents program has enabled employees to offer suggestions in an easy, effective and timely manner and provided over <strong>$2 million in overall budget savings</strong>!  Metastorm BPM has allowed the city to create greater efficiency and reduce cost, while improving employee and citizen satisfaction. </p>
<p>The city has been a long-time customer of Metastorm and we are extremely pleased to continue to contribute to its success.  Over the past few years the city has relied on Metastorm BPM to streamline, automate and manage several key processes and operations.  For example, Metastorm BPM has helped the city design and deploy several processes including a Security Access Privilege Request process that provides access to computer technology and resources for 5500 city employees, a Change Control Notification process that tracks and manages the release of changes and systems applications, and a Status Report process that gathers, tracks and manages all projects and initiatives happening in the city for the CAO.    </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As unemployment rates continue to rise and the speculation surrounding a double-dip recession increases, many businesses continue to face difficult decisions in order to remain profitable and competitive during this economic downturn.  Now more than ever businesses are searching for a way to dramatically reduce costs, rev up efficiency, and make the most out of what they have.  It seems that businesses believe the best way to immediately solve these problems is to get rid of anything they can that reduces expenses, while still being able to function.  Unfortunately, this method leaves the organization fragile and vulnerable, and with the uncertainty of an economic rebound in our near future it could ultimately cause the organization to fail.  </p>
<p>As the economic recession has lagged on, industry analysts, vendors and practitioners have seen business process management (BPM) solutions succeed.  Mainly because these solutions offer organizations valuable tools to design, integrate, automate, optimize, monitor and improve both human-centric and system-centric processes.  With organizations reporting 10-20% return on investment per process project, investing in a BPM solution is a smart decision that will produce immediate benefits during the recession, as well as position your organization to effectively and efficiently respond to change once the economy has improved. </p>

<p>By implementing a BPM solution, your organization will have control over key operational processes across the enterprise, inevitably giving users the ability to improve the quality of work produced on a daily basis.  Executives will gain visibility into the business operations across all levels, enabling them to identify redundant, complex, and underutilized process areas which will significantly decrease overall costs.  Additionally, BPM tools mitigate risk by allowing users to monitor operations.  Processes can be documented, enforced through process automation and business rules, and monitored and audited by users from all levels of the organization.</p>
<p>BPM tools also offer the resources to develop standard, automated processes, proven to increase productivity to a fraction of what it was before.  By automating processes, your organization will be in the position to do more with less by saving money and increasing agility. These improved processes allow your business to reduce overhead by eliminating redundancies or reusing resources that are no longer needed to meet objectives.   </p>
<p>What I find most important in this recession is that BPM solutions offer all users the visibility into organizational practices, capabilities, processes, and activities, allowing them to make better, more informed business decisions.  Don’t let this economic downturn force your organization to make decisions it will later regret.  Investing in a BPM solution will help your organizations cut costs now, position you to respond to change in the market place, and prevail when we approach an economic rebound. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday Metastorm <a href="http://www.metastorm.com/news/2010/082510.asp" target="_blank">announced</a> that it has been recognized as a Leader in “The Forrester Wave™: Business Process Management Suites, Q3 2010” report, published earlier this week.</p>
<p>In previous years, Forrester evaluated BPM suites across four categories and published four different BPMS Wave reports —document-centric, integration-centric, human-centric for Java and human-centric for .NET. Now, based on the evolving BPM landscape, Forrester focused down to one BPM Suite report, ultimately narrowing the playing field down to 11 global BPM vendors. I think this is a smart move – it is less confusing for organizations that are evaluating BPM, and it more accurately reflects the premise of BPM itself, which is that the strongest vendors handle human-centric, integration-centric and document-centric processes in a single BPM platform that ties together all types of disparate systems (Java, .NET, mainframe) under a single process layer.</p>
<p><span id="more-1880"></span></p>
<p>BPM tools and solutions have prevailed through the recent economic downturn, offering business solutions to help boost productivity and gain efficiency and greater control over key operational processes. Whether the organizational objectives are to reduce cost, improve productivity, increase compliance, enhance business agility or reduce risk, Metastorm BPM provides a comprehensive, user-friendly, and proven BPM solution, enabling users to quickly design, automate, analyze, and monitor organizational processes.</p>
<p>But going beyond the basics, I was pleased that Forrester called out a few things that really make Metastorm innovative and stand out from the wealth of basic BPM solutions on the market. The evaluation states, “Metastorm falls into the Leader category, with an impressive collaborative process design environment and Web 2.0 features. [Metastorm] now offers innovative collaborative workspaces and Web-based modeling features that make their BPM suite more accessible to business analysts and business users.”</p>
<p>The newest generation of BPM suites have been designed to target a wide variety of users process analysts, process architects, end users, business managers, and customers—and offer deeper, richer features and capabilities to meet business needs. Forrester noted that BPM vendors are beginning to focus on greater inclusion and collaboration across nontraditional roles for business process improvement, including process owners, business users and customers. It is with no coincidence that our newest products, <a href="http://www.metastorm.com/products/metastorm-m3-modeling.asp" target="_blank">Metastorm M3</a> and <a href="http://www.metastorm.com/products/metastorm-smart-business-workspace.asp">Metastorm Smart Business Workspace</a>, are aligned with this growing trend. Metastorm is committed to developing cutting-edge solutions that enhance collaboration, visibility and productivity across all levels of the organization.</p>
<p>Another differentiator for Metastorm is that we have long recognized the importance of delivering best-of-breed enterprise business architecture (EA), business process analysis (BPA) and business process management (BPM) technologies on a single platform – to help organizations tackle the ever elusive challenge of aligning strategy with execution. Metastorm has been one of the long-standing leaders in the BPM industry, but it is our unique ability to deliver full-scale EA and BPA software (which by the way is also ranked as a Leader in its category in the <a href="http://www.metastorm.com/library/reports/Forresterwave_EA_BPA_ITplanning.pdf" target="_blank">Forrester Wave for EA Tools, BPA and IT Planning report</a>) integrated with our BPM suite that sets us apart from the pack.</p>
<p>Forrester acknowledges this differentiation in the report, stating “Metastorm was one of the first vendors to take advantage of the synergies between EA and BPM. Now that investment seems to be paying dividends by providing a compelling environment for BPM and EA teams to collaborate on strategy and delivery for business process improvement.” However, I don’t think the magnitude of this differentiator was fully reflected in our Wave position, due to the nature of the BPM-centric scoring criteria. Perhaps one day soon, industry analysts will acknowledge the importance of merging the EA, BPA and BPM disciplines onto an integrated technology set rather than viewing them solely as independent technologies. In the meantime, we continue to work with our customers to help them see the powerful potential of the combination and realize this vision.</p>

<p>In this video from the <em>Metastorm Customers Speak Out </em>video testimonial series, <a href="http://www.metastorm.com/news/2010/080310.asp" target="_blank">released</a> earlier this week, Cindy Bivians, senior manager of corporate risk control from a Fortune 100 energy company, shares insights into how they deployed Metastorm ProVision to achieve optimal business solutions.  Bivians discusses how they are using Metastorm ProVision to model, visualize and improve gaps across the enterprise. The Department of Internal Affairs is recognized as an innovative and essential leader in New Zealand’s public service, dedicated to serving and connecting citizens, communities, and government to build a strong, safe nation.  The new license agreement will enable New Zealand government agencies to use Metastorm’s business process management and enterprise architecture software for ongoing planning and improvement initiatives.</p>
<p>“Through ongoing product innovation and a focus on customer success Metastorm has established itself as a market leader and we are fortunate to have a strong network of partners such as iOctane to deliver the Metastorm suite of products and services around the world,” stated Robin Martin, executive vice president of international operations for Metastorm.</p>

<p>“We are delighted to be able to sign this agreement with the New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs.  It will allow government agencies to access the Metastorm process modeling, business architecture and process execution technology tools,” said Chris Symes, head of client engagement for iOctane.</p>

<p>Operating on the Microsoft Windows Azure ™ platform, Metastorm M3 provides users with complete benefits of a private or public cloud, including scalability, performance, security, and elasticity.  Metastorm M3 is designed to be modeling for the masses, offering 11 different modeling types—goal, organization, capability, system, process/workflow, activity, rule, project, requirement, location and deliverable— from the <a href="http://www.metastorm.com/products/overview_index.asp">Metastorm Enterprise</a> software suite.  Additionally, Metastorm M3 provides 23 modeling objects and viewpoints, going beyond a traditional process model, to give users more comprehensive and holistic business improvements. </p>

<p>Metastorm M3 empowers businesses by offering a cloud-based environment through which an unlimited number of users can easily improve their organizations using enterprise modeling and collaboration.  Business and IT users are given a rich, social environment in the Cloud where they are able to utilize social networking tools such as chat, whiteboard, model annotation, sharing, recording, and playback to design and implement business practices.  A distinguishing feature of Metastorm M3 is that it offers secure, cloud-based collaborative enterprise modeling for anyone, anywhere.  Metastorm M3 is an excellent tool for mass deployment because it offers built-in modeling guides and real-time help, requiring no prior knowledge of or training in enterprise modeling and no IT setup.  Additionally, its location in the Cloud allows users to gain unlimited access, opening a broader, global collaboration for businesses to achieve the most optimal results.</p>
