One lesser known but fast growing approach to quality is to leverage business process management (BPM) technology to help drive process improvement.  BPM is particularly effective because it helps organizations identify opportunities for improvement, analyze process changes, and then actually implement and monitor the improvements to realize desired gains.

Great Strides Walks take place in May and June and are held in locations across the United States. Metastorm is fielding teams in four national locations – Baltimore, Maryland; Tampa, Florida; Detroit, Michigan; and San Francisco, California. Each team has set a substantial fundraising goal, and is excited to contribute to the foundation’s success.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) – a non-profit, donor supported organization that seeks to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease – recently became a customer, acquiring our Metastorm BPM software for use in its Pharmacy Services division.

“Metastorm is excited and honored that our software solutions will help further a very important mission, and we’re proud to take our involvement one step further by acting as a national sponsor of the CFF Great Strides Walk,” said Chris Desautelle, chief financial officer for Metastorm.

In Ovum’s report, “Decision Matrix: Selecting a Business Process Management Vendor (Competitor Focus),” Metastorm is placed in the elite, “shortlist” category – “the vanguard of the BPM market” – because it “combine[s] excellence in core technologies with a clear articulated approach to BPM.”

Metastorm also receives accolades for its user satisfaction rating. The report states that “the best indicator” of Metastorm’s success “is its excellent performance in the end-user sentiment survey. Metastorm has achieved the highest overall user sentiment assessment score.” These results are similar to the findings of another recent report – industry analyst firm Gartner’s “Magic Quadrant for Business Process Analysis Tools,” in which Metastorm receives one of the highest rankings in overall customer satisfaction.

According to the corresponding release this number is “the equivalent to total revenue for a top 20 pharma simply disappearing each year.”

The culprit? Revenue leakage.

With a $1.4 billion budget, one transportation agency needed to accomplish a wide range of its responsibilities including road and bridge maintenance, transportation planning, data collection and evaluation, project management, and contract compliance. To ensure all of these processes ran smoothly, department officials decided to implement an Enterprise Architecture (EA) solution to optimize the agency’s portfolio of processes, information applications and technology.

The agency’s EA initiative began when officials embarked on an intensive strategic planning effort. The team wanted to capture data and information gleaned during the planning process for use in the future. They realized that Metastorm ProVision® was the perfect structure for doing this.

Whether the agency was working on an engineering design application that affected state highway designs, or a financial application that ensures contractors and vendors are paid in a timely manner, Metastorm ProVision provided a methodology mechanism that allowed internal business users to understand the IT and the IT systems and add value to the process of selecting and integrating application systems that evidentially supported their citizenry.

As a result, the transportation department was able to quickly develop context charts, data models, work flows, reporting views/“radar charts” that allowed managers to integrate strategic IT planning with operational plans and budgets and better manage the entire agency.

“As we rolled out standard end-to-end business processes to users, BPM tools enabled users to see the big picture and put their role in context by understanding upstream and downstream process and data flows,” said an executive of the pharmaceutical company.

The article highlights how the company used BPM for various purposes from clinical trials to supply chain optimization. It started adopting BPM so much in fact; that it established a BPM Center of Excellence.

Having widely dispersed practices across the UK, coupled with its expansion plans, the corporation identified a strong need to enhance its current IT systems through Business Process Management to enable more consistent, faster and more effective data sharing and collaboration throughout the entire practice network to drive efficiencies and help accelerate growth.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina the country rushed to the aid of the devastated city while crime, destruction and an overall lack of resources catapulted New Orleans into desperation. Nonetheless the city shouldered the tremendous task of reconstructing almost everything—including its IT infrastructure.

Surrounded by overwhelming cataclysm and crippled by increasingly limited resources including damaged hardware and a severe labor shortage, the department began the daunting undertaking of overhauling the city’s infrastructure. This included creating a system that navigates the complicated application process required for Katrina victims to apply for FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Funds (HMGP), which provided them with money and other aid for rebuilding.

Because the city so desperately needed this funding, the IT department sought a solution that could be quickly and easily implemented while providing agility and flexibility—thus turning to Metastorm and Metastorm DNA® partner CIBER to automate the application process.

Metastorm helped the city automate multiple steps in the process, from ensuring the forms were filled out correctly and the documents were properly managed to routing completed forms to the appropriate processors and approvers. Ultimately the project was an overwhelming success, helping the city submit over 150 applications on behalf of its citizens.

Today the city of New Orleans continues to use Metastorm BPM® in combination with CIBER integration services to automate additional processes like contracts management and cut street permitting. Given the city’s limited resources, these solutions have helped create the efficiency that the city needs—greatly reducing costs associated with manual paper processes while helping to provide the level of agility it needs to fully restore it to the colorful city that it once was.
