5 steps to choosing the right BPM suite

Posted by: Metastorm PR on: March 19, 2009

We have blogged about the benefits a company can gain by adopting BPM, but how do you choose a BPM tool in the first place? Gary Comferford, blogger for Process Café, recently addressed this question in a post titled, “Your criteria for choosing a BPM tool?” In the post, he lists some criteria that were identified by a couple of vendors and a couple of consultants. They list various criteria from the ability to enable collaboration to the stability of the vendor to speed of implementation.

Gary touches on the questions that a customer might ask, but in a more general sense there can be a process to identifying and selecting a BPM Suite. Here’s some of our input to the conversation that Gary started on his blog. The 5 critical steps to choosing a BPM suite could be:

1. Determine the scope of your process management needs. This is vitally important. And surprising how often this first step is simply glossed over.
2. Clearly understand what the BPM “essentials” are. Only then can you determine what additional advanced features you need.
3. Based on what you discovered in Steps 1 and 2, make sure to document your requirements and weight priorities.
4. Finally, identify a short list of vendors.
5. And of course, conduct vendor evaluations and engage in proof-of-concepts.

In this white paper, Metastorm outlines the 5 key steps to selecting a BPM suite as well – all of which are aligned with Gary’s insight. Using this general process can help guide you to identify your most critical process needs, and possibly help you choose the right BPM Suite for your organization.
