President Barack Obama has promised one of the most transparent and agile White Houses ever, causing some political humorists to depict an extreme level of executive insight. Jokes aside though, greater transparency and greater agility leads to a greater level of interaction between government officials and the citizens they serve – or put more succinctly, is a building block that helps delivers on the promise of anytime, anywhere government.

BPM is being used by governments worldwide for everything from streamlining procurement processes for external vendors to achieving this nirvana of 24×7 citizen support. A city in the Eastern part of the United States, often finding its way onto the ubiquitous “best places to live list,” has used BPM to take control of processes through automation, bringing virtually all city information and services to the Web for greater citizen access and service. While transforming its operations into an automated environment, the city recognized the need, toward a goal of greater overall agility, to automate its many critical processes across platforms, systems and agencies; enter BPM.

The ROI is obvious, using BPM the city is now making better strategic decisions on both internal and citizen-facing processes allowing for greater agility and transparency, and ultimately better citizen service.
